Rome: how and when

Per ammirare dal vivo le bellezze mozzaffiato dell’Antica Roma non basta semplicemente andare a Roma. Sembra strano? Non è affatto così. Per ottenere il massimo dal nostro soggiorno romano bisogna imparare alcune regole di come e quando visitarla.

Come visitare Roma?

Il modo migliore per visitare la Città Eterna è, senza dubbio, la camminata lungo le strette strade antiche, mettendo i piedi sopra i cosiddetti sanpietrini. Purtroppo questo non è sempre possibile. Roma è una città molto grande e non tutti i tesori d’arte e architettura si trovano nel centro. Una delle possibilità di muoversi è sicuramente il trasporto pubblico, organizzato abbastanza bene. Gli abitanti ed i turisti hanno a disposizione oltre alle due linee della metropolitana che ricoprono gran parte della città, anche ferrovie, tram ed autobus. Un biglietto, che vale 100 minuti dalla prima timbratura, costa € 1,50. Inoltre, vorrei segnalarvi che, anche se i mezzi pubblici passano relativamente spesso, gli orari precisi di partenza non esistono. 

L’alternativa dei semplici mezzi pubblici è un’autobus turistico a due piani. A Roma ce ne sono tantissimi e molti fanno dei percorsi veramente straordinari. Lasciando perdere le strade “normali” che includono il Colosseo o San Pietro, esiste la possibilità di vedere Roma cristiana o medievale. I prezzi a partire da € 10.

Scoprire Roma si può ovviamente anche in carrozza. Persa tra i miti delle nuove technologie, è un bel modo di ripercorrere le millenarie vie come facevano gli antichi imperatoro e vescovi della Roma Papale. Notate però che si deve negoziare il prezzo della gita prima di salire! 

 

Quando visitarla?

Roma, essendo una delle città turisticamente  più famose al mondo, d’estate (periodo dei viaggi) è piena di gente vogliosa di fotografare tutto il possibile e per questo impedisce ad altri la stessa cosa. Il consiglio per tutti quelli che vogliono passare con degli antichi ruderi un po’ di tempo in tranquillità è quasi ovvio ed è composto di poche parole – da ottobre ad aprile. Venirci nel periodo autunnale, invernale o primaverile pare la soluzione migliore per chi vuole vedere i più spettacolari tesori dell’architettura romana in un’atmosfera molto più intima.

Il calendario di Roma non è dettato solo dalle stagioni, ma è regolato anche, se non soprattutto, dalle feste regliose e pagane. Ecco gli esempi più importanti.

  

Le feste natalizie hanno il loro epicentro nella Basilica di San Pietro, ma dei magnifici presepi si possono trovare un po' in tutte le chiese ed in speciali mostre tenute in città. La Pasqua viene celebrata soprattutto nelle 4 basiliche principali, secondo rituali antichissimi. Il 21 aprile si celebra il Natale di Roma fatto risalire al 754-753 a.C. Tra maggio e giugno si svolge la mostra delle rose nel roseto comunale. L'8 dicembre, invece, c’è la festa dell'Immacolata Concezione, omaggio alla colonna eretta vicino a Piazza di Spagna. I vigili del fuoco arrivano con la scala fino alla statua della Madonna e la incoronano.

To see the beauty of Ancient Rome you have to come to Rome, certainly, but not only. Sounds strange? It is not so. If you want to be fully satisfied of your stay in Rome you have learn some rules about how and when to visit the Eternal City.

How?

The best way to visit Rome is, without doubt, the walk along the narrow ancient streets. Unfortunately this is not always possible. The capital of Italy is a very big city and not all of the treasures of art and architecture are situated in the center. But don’t worry. There is the public transport and it is organized quite well. Residents and tourists have at their disposal two metro lines that cover much of the city, and railways, trams and buses, too. A ticket (100 minutes) costs € 1.50. Important: public autobus run frequently, but there is no timetable on bus stops!

The alternative of public transport is a simple tourist autobus (double-decker). In Rome there are a lot of routes and many of them are truly extraordinary. Leaving aside the “normal” routes that include the Colosseum and St. Peter's, it is possible to see Christian Rome or Medieval Rome. Prices from € 10.

To discover Rome you can of course also in the carriage. Lost in the myths of new techniques, it is a nice way to retrace the ancient streets like the ancient kings and bishops of Papal Rome. Note that the price of the trip must be negotiated before getting on!

When?

Rome, being one of the most famous tourist city in the world, in the summer (time travel) is full of people eager to photograph everything possible and to prevent others from the same thing. The advice for those who want to go through the ancient ruins of a little 'quiet time is almost obvious and is composed of few words - from October to April. Come during autumn, winter or spring seems the best solution for everyone who wants to see the most spectacular treasures of Roman architecture in the atmosphere much more intimate.

The calendar of Rome is not regulated only by the seasons, but it is also by pagan and religious festivities. Here are the most important examples.

The Christmas holidays have their epicenter in St. Peter's, but some of the great cribs can be found in all the churches and special exhibitions held in the city. Easter is celebrated mainly in four major basilicas, according to ancient rituals. On April 21, we celebrate the Birth of Rome traced back to 754-753 BC. Between May and June there is an exhibition of roses in the rose garden city. On 8 December, however, is the feast of the Immaculate Conception, a tribute to the column erected near the Spanish Steps. Firefighters arrive with the scale up to the statue of the Madonna and put Her the crown.
