Lazio: in the shadow of the Eternal City

La terra storica degli Etruschi, una regione nota per i suoi laghi vulcanici, le montagne, le vallate, i vigneti e gli oliveti, per secoli è rimasta nell'ombra di Roma. Vale la pena però di dimenticare un attimo il fascino della Città Eterna e scoprire le proposte turistiche del Lazio che offre i laghi e il mare per l’estate, e le montagne per gli sciatori durante l’inverno.

Ostia: la Pompei del Lazio

Tutti quelli che hanno deciso di passare le vacanze a Roma e vorrebbero sentire una vera atmosfera del Lazio senza doversi allontanarsi troppo dalla Città Eterna possono andare ad Ostia Antica. Distante circa 30 chilometri al ovest dal centro di Roma, è stata un porto principale dell’Impero ed importante centro commerciale. 

La vostra visita ad Ostia dovrebbe iniziare dalla via principale della città, Decumanus Maximus, che attraversa il forum (qui si trova il più grande tempio di Ostia Antica ed un teatro romano). Passeggiando per le strade di pietra passerete lungo tanti bagni, case e negozi. Abitata soprattutto da commercianti ed artigiani, Ostia è piena di piccoli laboratori artigianali e semplici case che possono essere visitate dentro.

 

Tarquinia: il centro del mondo etrusco

Gli etruschi sono stati una popolazione che è arrivata nella penisola italiana circa 3 mila anni fa e probabilmente la loro cultura e civilizzazione hanno influenzato molto la futura cultura Romana. Tarquinia è stata una delle città etrusche più importanti e per questo ora è una meta obbligatoria per ogni esploratore del Lazio. Quello che attrae i turisti in questa città sono la Necropoli ed il Museo Archeologico che contiene una delle belle collezioni delle antichità etrusche. Sulla collina, a due chilometri a sud-est di Tarquinia, si trova una necropoli di tombe particolari costruite nel morbido tufo vulcanico. Esistono quasi 6 mila tombe, ma appena 15 di loro sono aperte ai visitatori. 

Sperlonga – il bello della costa laziale

Le spiaggie del Lazio non fanno parte di quelle coste italiane più affolate durante il periodo estivo, anche se sono veramente spettacolari. A tutti quelli che vogliono passare i mesi più caldi come i più grandi imperatori della Roma Antica, consiglierei Sperlonga. Proprio qui, a meno di un chilometro a sud della città si trova un grande complesso della villa di Tiberio!

Sperlonga, situata sul Mar Tirreno tra Gaeta e Terracina, è caratterizzata da una bella spiaggia sabbiosa e da mare pulito. La vecchia parte della città, situata su una collina rocciosa, è un pittoresco labirinto di edifici, stradine strette, piazze, terrazze e centinaia di gradini.

It is worthwhile to forget for a moment about the beauty of Eternal City and discover the tourist offer of Lazio: the lakes and the sea for the summer and the mountains for skiers during the winter.

Ostia: Pompeii of the Lazio

All those who have decided to spend the vacation in Rome and would like to hear a real taste of Lazio but don’t want to leave the Eternal City for a long time, can go to Ostia Antica. Located about 30 kilometers from the center of Rome, the city was a major port and an important commercial center of Roman Empire.

Your visit in Ostia should start from the main street of the city, called Decumanus Maximus, near the forum (here is the largest Ostia’s temple and beautiful Roman theater). Strolling through stone streets you will pass along many baths, shops and houses. Inhabited mostly by traders and artisans, Ostia is full of small workshops and simple houses that can be visited inside.

Tarquinia: the center of the Etruscan world

The Etruscans were a people who came to the Italian peninsula approximately 3,000 years ago and probably their culture and civilization has influenced the future Roman culture. Tarquinia was one of the most important Etruscan cities, and this is now a mandatory destination for any explorer Lazio. Tourists are attracted to this city by Necropolis and Archaeological Museum which contains one of the best collections of Etruscan antiquities. On the hill, two kilometers south-east from Tarquinia, is situated a necropolis of special tombs, built in soft volcanic tuff. There are almost 6000, but only 15 of them are open to visitors.

Sperlonga – the beauty of Lazio’s coast

The beaches of Lazio aren’t so popular like other Italian coasts. But they are really spectacular! For everyone who wants to spend his summer as the greatest emperors of Ancient Rome, I would recommend Sperlonga. Right here, less than a mile south of the city is a large complex of the villa of Tiberius!

Sperlonga, located on the Tyrrhenian Sea, between Gaeta and Terracina, is characterized b y a beautiful sandy beach and clean sea. The old part of town, situated on a rocky hill, is a picturesque maze of buildings, narrow streets, squares, terraces and hundreds of stairs.
