Rest like the Romans do

"We have this beautiful mountain in certain volcanic eruption front of several centuries to the founding of Rome. In a time that has preceded every story it emerged in the middle of the vast plain which once stretched between the Apennines and the sea". With these words Stendhal described the amazing Castelli Romani (Roman Castles) area, located a short distance from Rome.

The centre of the „fugitives”

When in the Italy’s capital are more than 30 degrees, the Castelli Romani offer the fresh air constantly. A set of 16 countries of the Albano Mountains (the most beautiful are: Castel Gandolfo, Frascati), before it became a tourist area most frequented of the province of Rome, for a few centuries has been a source of salvation for many Romans.

It’s because of the 14th century when many residents of the Eternal City had to escape from the economic and political difficulties arising from Avignon Captivity, took refuge in the castles of feudal Roman families. Currently, when the direction of the escapes is changed (many residents of the Castelli  come to Rome for the work), the Castelli have still remained an important destination for fugitives: although now the Romans escape only from the heat.

You have to live to eat…

The real magnesium of Castelli, which attracts here the Romans every weekend, is the beauty of the lakes (Lake Albano and Nemi) and the fresh air. But probably the most important, which leads here Romans and tourists, is the food. Almost all countries of Castelli area have a variety of restaurants that offer typical dishes of Roman cuisine. The recipes are still very traditional and use the typical products of the region. On the menus of local restaurants you will find beef, mushrooms, artichokes and beans. For your culinary adventures in the Lazio I would like to advise you especially Ariccia, known thanks to fraschette and a restaurant in Velletri (called “Benito al bosco”) where all the dishes are prepared by the official cook of the Italian Council of Ministers!
